Windows 11 upgrade option not for these users? They may have to take this big decision

Windows 11 upgrade: If you are still rocking the now-outdated Windows 7 on your computer or laptop, you may have to back up your data and perform a ‘clean’ installation of Windows 11 when it is launched. Yes, that is a very complicated download process to go through and everyone may not be able to do so or perhaps, would not want to do so either due to the uncertainty involved. Notably, ever since Microsoft unveiled Windows 11, the next generation of its operating system last month, users have been worrying about many facets of the upcoming operating system. These range from worrying about hardware compatibility to the Windows 11 download process. While having the option to directly upgrade to Windows 11 from an older operating system version is quite convenient, it looks like Windows 7 users are not going to be so lucky.

Instead of being able to do a Windows 11 upgrade without losing data, something that will be supported on Windows 10 and Windows 8.1 devices, users on the older, now completely outdated Windows 7 will have to perform a ‘fresh install’ of the operating system, as reported by TechRadar. This means they will not be able to choose the upgrade option when installing Windows 11. The information has appeared via a Windows 11 FAQ released by Lenovo that informs users about the upgrade process.

“Most devices available for purchase now will be upgradeable to Windows 11. You will have the option to upgrade, clean install, or reimage Windows 10 devices to move to Windows 11. For Windows 7 devices that meet hardware requirements, you will need to clean install or reimage to go directly to Windows 11,” the guide on Lenovo’s website reads. While the advice is clearly intended for Lenovo customers, it seems likely that it would also apply to other devices upgrading from the now-outdated version of Windows.

Windows 11 Hardware Hurdle

However, even if users are willing to back up all of their data and perform the clean upgrade to Windows 11, there is no guarantee that their hardware supports the company’s new requirements to install Windows 10. Unless your computer or laptop’s CPU was released after 2017, it is extremely unlikely that your processor will be supported by Microsoft, and could prevent you from installing the update in the first place.

How to do a Windows 11 Upgrade

Users who do have compatible hardware will need to make sure they take a complete backup of their data on a separate storage device, then wipe their hard disk partition where Windows 7 is installed and then install Windows 11 using the installer. The ability to format a hard drive is built into the Windows installation service.

Mi and Redmi laptops to launch in India soon. (Xiaomi)

Xiaomi is expected to launch new laptops under its Mi and Redmi brands in India. Xiaomi already offers laptops under the Mi brand, and it could soon debut Redmi laptops in India as well. The launch is expected to take place as early as this month. Xiaomi entered the laptop market in India last year with the Mi Notebook. It currently has four Mi laptops including the Mi Notebook 14, Mi Notebook 14 Horizon Edition, Mi Notebook 14 IC, and Mi Notebook 14 e-Learning Edition.

There aren’t any details on which Xiaomi laptops exactly will make its way to India. But according to tipster Ishan Agarwal, there are new Mi laptops planned for India. Xiaomi also has a Redmi laptop launch planned for this month, the tipster added. The company is yet to announce the launch of any laptop in India. Xiaomi did put out a tweet asking users which combination they would prefer for their next work or personal laptop. The options were a 15.6-inch non-metallic 2kg laptop, a 14-inch metallic 1.5kg laptop, anad a 13.3-inch metallic 1.4kg laptop. This probably hints on a new Mi laptop coming soon.

Xiaomi could be bringing its recently launched laptops to India. It launched the Mi Notebook Pro X 15 in China late last month. The laptop starts at CNY 7,999 ( ₹92,100 approx), and it comes with a 15.6-inch Samsung E4 OLED display. The Mi Notebook Pro X 15 runs up to an 11th-generation Intel Core i7 processor paired with up to 1TB of storage. Under its Redmi brand, Xiaomi launched the RedmiBook Pro 14 and RedmiBook Pro 15 laptops back in February this year. These laptops are powered by the 11th-generation Intel processors. It launched the AMD Ryzen 5000 series variants of the RedmiBook Pro 14 and RedmiBook Pro 15 in May this year.

Xiaomi is expected to launch these laptops in India. It would be the first Redmi laptops in India as the company looks to expand the sub-brand portfolio.

MacBook Air is going to get refreshed in 2022.  (Apple )

Apple’s MacBook Air with new colours and the Apple M2 chip is being tipped to launch in the first half of 2022. According to reports, Apple is currently testing multiple prototypes of this next-generation MacBook Air. One of the main changes in the new MacBook Air is going to be under the hood with the new M-series chip. On the outside, Apple is expected to make things exciting by offering the laptop in different colours. Besides this, it is also being tipped that Apple might bring in a new low-end MacBook Pro and a new Mac Pro in 2022.

The tipster who goes by the name @dylandkt on Twitter shared that the Apple M2 SoC is “on track” to make its debut in the first half of 2022 along with the new colourful MacBook Air. The new MacBook Air devices are expected to come in the same colours Apple introduced on the iMac in April this year. Going by that, we can expect to see the 2022 MacBook Air in Green, Orange, Yellow, Pink, Purple, Blue, and Silver.

According to the tipster, the Apple M2 chip is going to be built on the same foundation as Apple’s next-gen A15, and it is going to come with a significantly improved performance scope. Apple introduced the M1 chip as a part of its silicon transition last year. A successor to the M1 chip, the M1X, might also make its debut later this year, ahead of the M2 next year.

Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman had reported that Apple would introduce its high-end, redesigned MacBook Air by the end of 2021, and it was going to come with the successor to the M1 processor. The successor to the M1 has been codenamed Staten and promises faster computing cores than what Apple brought in with the M1. However, the new chip is expected to have the same number of cores.

Besides this a new chip and new colours, there might be more coming in with the new MacBook Airs. Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo reported that Apple may use mini-LED displays on the 2022 MacBook Air models. However, it is unclear if this new display tech will be limited to high-end models or be available across the lineup.
